Coffee is a complicated art, but homemade coffee doesn’t have to be. Follow these steps to make barista-level coffee in the comforts of your home.
How to Make Good Coffee at Home
There is no better way to kickstart your day than with a cup of good coffee. But going to coffee shops day after day can get pricey. Follow these steps and people will think you’re a barista at home.
STEP 1: Get Freshly Roasted Coffee Beans
All the goodness of coffee begins with a single bean. If the beans you use are bad, you can expect your coffee to be bad.
Coffee beans that are freshly roasted contain the most flavor. The longer the beans are exposed to air, the more it loses its flavor.
This is why it’s important to ensure that the coffee beans you use are fresh:
- Look for a glossy appearance. Coffee beans that feel moist or oily to the touch contain the most flavor.
- Check for residue. Freshly roasted coffee are more likely to leave residue because the oils and compounds that cover it haven’t evaporated yet.
- Pop the beans in a resealable bag and see what happens. When beans are roasted under high heat, they release a ton of carbon dioxide when cooled. Putting the beans in the bag will make it puff up from the carbon dioxide. This means that beans have been roasted within the past seven to 10 days.
STEP 2: Use Filtered Water
It may not seem obvious but the water you use can actually affect the flavor of your coffee. Chlorine and minerals from tap water can add a weird metallic taste to your coffee.
To ensure that your coffee is always at its finest, make sure to use filtered water. The fresher the water, the cleaner your coffee will taste.
STEP 3: Watch Your Water-To-Grind Ratio
In general, you need 16 parts of water for every one part of ground coffee beans. A good approximate would be four tablespoons of beans for a cup of coffee.
The perfect temperature for your coffee is from 195 to 205 degrees. Anything beyond that will give your coffee a burnt taste.
STEP 4: Use the Right Coffee Machine
Making a good cup of coffee at home is an art. Watching the temperature, grinding the beans, and measuring every ingredient perfectly takes a lot of time and effort.
